• Le chapeau

Dans ses Mémoires, Maigret raconte que Simenon avait vu, lors de sa première visite au Quai des Orfèvres, une photographie sur laquelle le commissaire portait «ce maudit chapeau», et voilà pourquoi il l'avait affublé d'un melon, ce qui était loin de plaire à celui-ci... Malgré tout, Maigret dut porter un chapeau melon dans les romans des périodes Fayard et Gallimard. Mais, heureusement pour lui, la mode évolua, et dans la suite de la saga il put arborer un chapeau mou ou feutre

• Il cappello

Nelle sue Memorie, Maigret racconta che Simenon aveva visto, mentre la sua prima visita al Quai des Orfèvres, una fotografia nella quale il commissario portava «questo maledetto cappello», ed ecco perché lo aveva fornito di una bombetta, che era davvero un modello che certo non piace al personaggio… Malgrado tutto, Maigret dovrà portare uno «chapeau-melon» nei romanzi dei periodi Fayard e Gallimard. Ma, fortunatamente per lui, la moda cambiò e nel seguito della serie potrà indossare un cappello morbido o un feltro.

• The hat

In his Memoirs Maigret told that Simenon had seen, during his first visit to the Quai des Orfèvres, a photography where the Chief Inspector was wearing "this damned hat", and that was why the novelist made him wear a bowler hat, which didn't please him at all… Nevertheless Maigret had to wear a bowler hat in the Fayard and Gallimard novels. But fortunately for the Chief Inspector, fashion evolved, and later on in the saga he could wear a trilby or fedora.

Toujours dans ses Mémoires, le commissaire dit apprécier l'interprétation de Pierre Renoir, en particulier parce qu'il «ne s'est pas vissé un chapeau melon sur la tête, mais [il] a arboré un chapeau mou tout ordinaire»… Ses successeurs l'imiteront. Des trois premiers acteurs au cinéma, on retiendra que le chapeau bordé de Harry Baur est sans doute le plus élégant…

Sempre nelle sue Memorie il commissario dice di apprezzare l’interpretazione di Pierre Renoir, in particolare perché “non ha avvitato un chapeau-melon sulla sua testa, ma indossa un cappello floscio molto ordinario”… I suoi successori l’imiteranno. Dei tre primi attori cinematografici, si noterà che il cappello foderato di Harry Baur è senza dubbio il più elegante…

Still in his Memoirs the Chief Inspector told he had enjoyed Pierre Renoir's interpretation, especially because he "didn’t screw a bowler hat on his head, and he wore a quite ordinary trilby"… His successors imitated him. Il faut avouer qu'Albert Préjean porte le chapeau avec une certaine élégance (même si sa pipe est manifestement trop grosse pour lui !), mais il n'est pas sûr que l'on puisse en dire autant de Charles Laughton… Quant à Michel Simon… votre avis, mesdames ?!

Occorre ammettere che Albert Préjan porta il cappello con una certa eleganza (anche se la sua pipa è evidentemente troppo grossa per lui !) ma non si è sicuri di poter dire altrettanto di Charles Laughton… Quanto a Michel Simon… la vostra opinione, signore ?!

You have to admit that Albert Préjean wears his hat with some elegance (even if his pipe is obviously too big for him!), but it is not sure that we can say the same for Charles Laughton… As for Michel Simon… what do you think, ladies?!
