SIMENON SIMENON. MAIGRET'S WARDROBE
Maigret's clothing in the movies and on television

• Gilet... si o no?

 Waistcoat… or not waistcoat?...
Along with the jacket and trousers, the waistcoat belongs to the male suit. However this waistcoat became out of fashion around the middle of the last century (reappearing later on as a trendy accessory, yet no longer necessarily related to the three-piece suit). We find mentions of Maigret's waistcoat in the Fayard and Gallimard novels, and it doesn't appear anymore in the Presses de la Cité novels. Thus we can imagine that this waistcoat belonged to the dark suit worn by Maigret in the first part of the saga, and that it disappeared afterwards. Cinema and TV adaptations echoed this phenomenon.
The classical suit waistcoat is buttoned, and of course it is cut in the same fabric than the jacket and trousers. This is what we see in the first movie adaptations, but also in some later TV adaptations, in which making the actor wear the three-piece suit allows to create, as well as setting accessories, such as old cars, an ambience that should evoke a certain era

The buttoned waistcoat is rather short, over trousers that are worn well above waist (see Maigret at the Coroner's: "His trousers, cut in France, went up to mid-chest height."). And the more the actor tends to be a little paunchy, the more the waistcoat seems to go up high!

In the trilogy with Albert Préjean, the actor wears most of the time a double-breasted jacket, that is to say a waistcoat with double row of buttons. We might think he wore this jacket without a waistcoat, but having watched carefully the three films, we found but a sole scene (a night scene, hence the less good quality of the picture…) in which Préjean showed that in reality there was indeed a waistcoat under his jacket!

• When Jean Gabin in turn became Maigret, the waistcoat was going out of fashion in the current male dressing. This allowed him to wear no waistcoat in Maigret tend un piège (as the story was taking place in August heat, thus he could easily do without it…), and in Maigret et l'affaire Saint-Fiacre he put on a waistcoat that didn't fit the jacket (probably a woollen waistcoat, maybe with long sleeves, suitable for cold season). While in Maigret voit rouge the Chief Inspector found again a more traditional suit, with three assorted pieces of clothing.

So far we know, Rupert Davies didn't wear any waistcoat in the English series, whereas Gino Cervi and Michael Gambon sometimes wore one, but not always… As for Rowan Atkinson, he was always impeccably strapped in his three-piece suit…

• The series with Jean Richard illustrated very well this fashion evolution concerning the waistcoat. From the first black and white episodes, in which the actor wore a waistcoat matching the jacket, we move on to the first episodes in colours, where the waistcoat was almost always present; then later on in the series (let's remember that shooting took place in contemporary Paris, and not in a reconstructed Paris located in a particular area, as is was the case for the series with Crémer) the waistcoat disappeared, according fashion in use at the time of shooting.
It's different for the series with Bruno Crémer, which is deliberately located in an area that would remind the '50s; thus we could see, with few exceptions, the actor wearing a suit that also included a waistcoat, sometimes not with buttons, but rather looking like a sleeveless sweater.
