Maigret and the Ghost, Penguin’s English translation of Simenon’s Maigret et le fantôme will be available through Amazon.co.uk as of December 6, 2018.

The paperback will be available in the USA from Amazon.com on this same date, but the release of the Kindle edition will not occur until August 6, 2019.

December 6, 2018 holds as the release date from the following other Amazon sources:

Maigret et le fantôme originally appeared in 1964. It came out in English translation as Maigret and the Ghost in 1976 with eight subsequent reprints through 2003. An additional title is Maigret and the Apparition. The translator then was Eileen Ellenbogen, and the translator for this new Penguin edition is Roz Schwartz. 

The original work was the 90th in Simenon’s order of publication, and this work is the 62nd in Penguin’s modern series of translations. 

This novel presents the Chief Inspector with a complicated challenge: “Rarely, in a single day, had he gathered as many details in a case….” Nevertheless, driven in particular to avenge the brutal attempt to slay Inspector Lognon, Maigret wades through the seedy morass of the art world to answer questions like: what did Lognon mean when he murmured the single word “Ghost” while lying wounded on the sidewalk? What about the bedroom with obscene drawings and sexual symbols on the walls? Did a lunatic create them?

Maigret's clothing in the movies and on television 

• La cravate

La cravate est un accessoire inévitable pour les hommes de la génération de Maigret… On sait peu de choses de cette cravate dans la saga, si ce n'est que le commissaire a de la peine à la nouer correctement, et qu'en réalité, cette cravate le gêne souvent et qu'il en desserre le nœud quand il a trop chaud ou qu'il veut se mettre à l'aise pour travailler au bureau. Avec son costume sombre des débuts, probablement cette cravate était-elle aussi noire, ou du moins sombre. Mais parfois, quand il est en vacances (voir L'Improbable Monsieur Owen), Maigret se permet des cravates de couleurs vives.  

Dans les premières adaptations au cinéma, la cravate portée par les acteurs n'a rien de particulier, et elle s'harmonise avec la teinte sombre du costume. Par la suite, la panoplie s'étend, et on voit plus souvent Maigret avec des cravates de couleur unie, ou rayées, ou encore de fantaisie… 

• La cravate

La cravatta è un un accessorio inevitabile per gli uomini della generazione di Maigret... Si sà pocco di questa cravatta nella serie, a parte il fatto che il commissario ha difficoltà a la legare correttamente, e in realtà questa cravatta lo dà spesso fastidio, e allentà il nodo quando è troppo caldo o vuole sentirsi a proprio agio a lavorare in ufficio. Con il suo vestito scuro degli inizi, probabilmente questa cravatta era anche nera, o almeno scura. Però a volte quando è in vacanza (vedi L'Improbable Monsieur Owen) Maigret si concede cravatte dai colori vivaci. 

Nei primi adattamenti cinematografici la cravatta indossata dagli attori non è niente di speciale, e si armonizza con il colore scuro del vestito. In seguito, la gamma si estende, et si vede più spesso Maigret con cravatte semplici, a righe o fantasia... 

• The tie 

The tie is an unavoidable accessory for men of Maigret's generation… We know little things about this tie in the saga, except that the Chief Inspector had hard time to knot it properly, and in fact this tie often bothered him and he loosened it when he was too warm or he wanted to make himself comfortable when working in his office. With his dark suit of the beginnings probably this tie was also black, or at least of a dark colour. But sometimes, when Maigret was on holiday (see The Unlikely Monsieur Owen) he would allow himself wearing ties in bright colours.  

In the first cinema adaptations, the tie worn by actors had nothing particular, and it was in harmony with the dark hue of the suit. Later on the panoply extended and we could more often see Maigret with plain, stripped or fancy ties…
