Movie data sheet The film Majestic Hotel Cellars was released in 1945; it was the third film in which Maigret was played by Albert Préjean. Whereas the two preceding films had been well received (let's remember that those films had been produced by the Continental, and thus they were projected durinFrance Occupation…), this last one was a little forgotten. Maybe because when it was released, the Liberation of France had already occurred, and people had other cinematographic desires, and other themes in sight (see also our comment below). Yet when we see this film nowadays, we can but be struck by the fact that it's paradoxically in this latest opus that Préjean was the nearest to Maigret as we can imagine him: while in the first two films we had to deal with a Maigret alias Préjean rather "leaping", far from the placid Chief Inspector's attitude, in this film the actor played him in a more leisurely way.

one with Jean Richard (Les Caves du Majestic, 1987),
one with Michael Gambon
(Maigret and the Hotel Majestic, 1993),
and one with Bruno Crémer (

Comment All the scenes that are taking place in the cellars of the Majestic, very well described by the novelist, can but attract the attention of a filmmaker, who finds there the opportunity to plant an interesting setting. This is why we can see, as well as in the film than in the episodes, the pleasure the directors had in filming the hustle and bustle in the kitchens and the busy staff.
TV adaptations follow rather closely the plot of the novel, whereas in the film most of the intrigue deals with the paternity theme, seen under an aspect that probably reflects the fact that this film was shot under a regime that advocated certain moral values… In the novel Simenon writes in such a way that the reader doesn't have any doubts about Donge's legitimacy to claim his paternity (and he's helped by Maigret, who will play, this time, with certain success, the mender of destiny, by returning his son to Donge) and he seems to show us that Clark doesn’t feel a real affection for his son, or at least that he will rather easily console himself for his loss.
Nothing similar in the film: the character of Petersen (alias Clark) is showed as a "good father", very attached to his son, and the story ends with Donge's sacrifice, who lets the child to Petersen so that this one can raise him in silk The ultimate scene, with this close-up on Donge who is sacrificing himself, is meant to be gripping, and, unlike the novel, there won't be any happy end, at least for Donge; and it's also probably due to the fact that the character of
Petersen is shown in a more and more positive light over the course of the film.

SIMENON SIMENON.

SIMENON SIMENON. TWO FAMILIES AND TWO EPOCHS FOR THE WRITER
Almost half a life with Tigy and a second one with Denyse… and different families
