The writing enigmas of the first novels in the Maigret saga 

Dans cette nouvelle rubrique, nous allons faire un petit tour d'horizon des énigmes non encore résolues à propos des dates de rédaction des premiers romans Maigret. Nous allons faire le point sur les recherches menées jusqu'àprésent, et sur les solutions que les bibliographes ont proposées. 

In questa nuova rubrica faremo un breve giro d’orizzonte degli enigmi non ancora risolti a proposito delle date di redazione dei primi romanzi di Maigret. Faremo il punto sulle ricerche fin qui effettuate e sulle risposte che i bibliografi hanno proposto. 

In this new column we'll do a small overview of unsolved enigmas about the writing dates of the first Maigret novels. We'll review the research conducted so far, and the solutions proposed by bibliographers. 

La Tête d'un homme 

Si toutes les bibliographies s'accordent sur le fait que ce roman a été écrit alors que Simenon séjournait à l'hôtel Aiglon à Paris, les chercheurs ne sont pas tous du même avis quant à la date de ce séjour. L'édition Rencontre propose septembre 1930 pour la rédaction, en se basant, entre autres, sur les souvenirs de Tigy. Mais Menguy reçut plus tard une précision de Tigy, qui disait que Simenon habitait cet hôtel parce qu'il « avait à faire à Paris ». Le biographe en déduisit que le romancier était descendu à l'hôtel parce qu'il préparait le Bal anthropométrique, et donc que le roman aurait été rédigé en février 1931. Pourtant, rien n'empêchait que Simenon ait fait une courte halte à Paris en quittant Morsang pour aller à Concarneau, et donc les bibliographies ont proposé, jusqu'à récemment, les deux hypothèses possibles. Néanmoins, les toutes dernières corrections apportées à la chronologie simenonienne repoussent la date de rédaction du roman en mai 1931. Petit détail réservé aux puristes, nous diront peut-être nos lecteurs… Cependant, selon la date que l'on choisit, ce roman passe du cinquième au septième rang dans l'ordre de rédaction… 

La Testa di un uomo 

Se tutte le biografie sono d’accordo sul fatto che questo romanzo è stato scritto quando Simenon soggiornava all’hotel Aiglon a Parigi, i ricercatori non sono tutti dello stesso avviso riguardo alla data del soggiorno. L’edizione Rencontre propone settembre 1930 per la scrittura, basandosi, tra l’altro, sui ricordi di Tigy. Ma in seguito Menguy riceve una precisazione dalla stessa Tigy, la quale spiegava che Simenon abitava in quell’albergo perché «aveva da fare a Parigi». Il biografo ne dedusse che il romanziere era sceso in quell’albergo perché stava preparando il «Bal anthropométrique» e dunque che sarebbe stato redatto nel febbraio del 1931. Pertanto nulla avrebbe impedito che Simenon avesse fatto una breve sosta a Parigi, lasciando Morsang per andare a Concarneau, e dunque i bibliografi hanno proposto, fino a poco fa’, le due ipotesi possibili. Nondimeno le ultime correzioni apportate alla cronologia simenoniana respingono la data della redazione del romanzo nel maggio 1931. Piccolo particolare riservato ai puristi, i nostri lettori possono dircelo.. Nonostante tutto, secondo quale che sia la data scelta, questo romanzo passa dal quinto al settimo posto nell’ordine di scrittura… 

A Man's Head

In every bibliography you can read that this novel was written when Simenon settled in hotel Aiglon in Paris. Yet not all researchers are of the same opinion about the date when this stay took place. The Rencontre edition proposed September 1930 for the writing, based on Tigy's memories. But later on Menguy received precision from Tigy, who said that Simenon lived in this hotel because "he was busy in Paris". The biographer deduced that the novelist stayed in the hotel because he was preparing the Anthropometric Ball, and therefore the roman should have been written in February 1931. Yet it's all possible that Simenon had made a short stop in Paris when leaving Morsang to go to Concarneau, and in the recent bibliographies the two possible hypotheses were proposed. However, the latest corrections to the Simenonian chronology postpone the writing date to May 1931. Maybe our readers would say that this is only a small detail reserved for purists… However, depending on the date which is chosen, this novel goes from fifth to seventh in the writing order…

SIMENON SIMENON "REPORT" - THE SNOW WAS DIRTY IS BLEAK AND UN CONFORTABLE BUT IT'S ALSO A MASTERPIECE

The Guardian - 11/02/2020 - Sam Jordison - Georges Simenon’s remarkable novel manages to make its loathsome protagonist compelling company - If you’ve just read The Snow Was Dirty because you were encouraged to do so by the Reading Group, I should both apologise and congratulate you. The apology because, oh god, this book is bleak. The congratulations because it’s also an immortal masterpiece. First, the darkness. In an afterword in the New York Review of Books edition, William T. Vollmann says that in this book “Simenon has concentrated noir into a darkness as solid and heavy as the interior of a dwarf star”. That’s putting it mildly. Simenon doesn’t so much tell us a story as confront us with one. It’s a close third person narration. Uncomfortably close. Because the thoughts and desires of Frank Friedmaier are nasty, brutish and confusing. He’s the 19-year-old son of a brothel madam who, within the first few pages of the book, picks up a knife from his “friend” Kromer in a sordid bar and decides to kill a man...>>>
