Movie data sheet The film was released in February 1943, under the title Picpus. It was the first in the trilogy with Albert Préjean. Even if some critics were surprised at the choice of the actor, who was too twirling to embody the massive and placid Chief Inspector, few, however, noticed the important differences between the scenario and the plot of the novel. Indeed, at the moment the film was released, the novel had only been published in its serialized form. And yet, if you knew the novel, it seemed obvious that there was little left in the film: Le Cloaguen was almost the sole character that kept a similar role. For the rest, Maigret aliaPréjean spent his time stumbling on many corpses, and the culprit wasn'indeed the same as in the novel…

Comment Three elements characterize this novel: a somewhat complex plot, the profusion of characters and an often humorous tone.
These elements give to the scriptwriters the opportunity to put particular emphasis on some of the characters, and even to create new protagonists, as well as to choose to faithfully follow the plot, or on the contrary to move further away from it. The rather light tone of the novel allows the scriptwriters to sometimes introduce a few winks, like the one that is to be found in the Italian episode, when Maigret and his wife evoke Simenon, who has just written a new novel about the Chief Inspector. A kind of humorous "mise en abyme" within the series…
