SIMENON SIMENON.

SIMENON SIMENON. MAIGRET'S WARDROBE
Maigret's clothing in the movies and on television

A pipe, an overcoat and a hat. With these three words Simenon is drawing Maigret. The pipe is the Chief Inspector's essential extension, yet the overcoat and the hat are also required to carve the character's silhouette. Fashion in use at the time of his creation implies that Maigret wears characteristic clothing, composed, besides hat and overcoat, of a suit with jacket, waistcoat and trousers held by suspenders, and some other accessories described in the novels.
In this new column we'll take a look in Maigret's wardrobe, presenting each element of it, but above all making comparisons with the cinema and TV adaptations, so as to see how actors made Maigret's clothing their own as a help to better slip into the skin of the character.

The overcoat
The black overcoat with the velvet collar appears from the beginning of the series, and it is particularly well suited to the setting of these novels that take place under autumn and winter cold. We know that Maigret also wore other lighter overcoats for warm days, yet it is this heavy overcoat, in which the Chief Inspector is wrapped, that is a part of the character in popular imagination.

The first Maigret on screen couldn't fail to wear this overcoat. Here is Pierre Renoir in black overcoat, with pockets in which you can thrust your hands; resemblance is close all the more with the novels as the film dates the same years as the writing.

For following adaptations in the movies and on television we'll have several versions of this overcoat, more or less successful…
Here is at first a gallery of overcoats of which the least we can say is that they are hardly elegant … Thus let us move quickly over these big unsightly lapels in Abel Tarride's and Harry Bar's versions… and over the first overcoat in the Bruno Crémer series, with these big pockets I've always found so ugly… don't you think so, ladies?!

Then there are elegant versions of this overcoat. So our models are going to parade: at first Jean Gabin with a thick woollen overcoat and a checked scarf for the extra touch; Rupert Davies in a dark overcoat; Gino Cervi in an authentic velvet collar overcoat; and Jean Richard who shows you how to raise the overcoat collar when weather is windy or cold…
