Biographer Pierre Assouline recounts how, shortly after settling down in Connecticut, Simenon was tempted, even pressured to become a naturalized American citizen, but something imperceptible, perhaps intuitive, restrained him. Notably, Simenon was at the same time under consideration for election to the Royal Academy of Belgium and he wondered if being an American writer and a Belgian academician might be incompatible. It seems that the discrimination he observed directed against Jews, Blacks, and Communists eventually influenced him to “renounce becoming an American. Definitively.” Nevertheless, Simenon would later on describe the 10 years he spent in America as “the only years I would love to relive.” 

While contently in residence at Shadow Rock Farm, Simenon really put his nose to the grindstone and his daily writing ritual was “immutable.” (He broke this schedule once a month to travel to New York City for restaurant and nightclub hopping with Tigy.) As a result, the author was extremely prolific, writing 26 novels during those five years. Contrary to what one might have expected, only four distinctively ‘American’ novels resulted: 1. Belle 2. The Brothers Rico 3. Red Lights/Danger Ahead/The Hitchhiker 3. The Clockmaker/The Watchmaker. There were two other novels that fell somewhat short: 1. Maigret, Lognon and the Gangsters,which involves Americans in France during the story. 2. The Fugitive/Account Unsettled, which shows non-Americans in America toward the end. 

A substantial number of the novels written during Simenon’s Connecticut period were Maigrets, actually 13 of 26 or 50%. The contrasting ‘American’ novels were like romans durs, featuring familiar themes that evolved “in accordance with the same logic, based on an inner need and sense of fate, sometimes disrupted by personal events.” Ironically, Anglophones can only envy Francophones because 15 of Simenon’s “romans américains” are available to them in a 2009 two-volume Omnibus collection. They begin with Les Destinées, written in 1929, years before living in America, and end with La Main, written in 1968, years after he left America. 

Some Americanization of the Belgian author is visible in his choice of words in the ensuing books. Indeed, as he became more proficient in English, he began playing a role in verifying the translations of his works. “Before, he didn’t care. From that time on, he nitpicked.” I understand Simenon having been irritated, even angered by those translations. Personally, I found the Maigrets (prior to the current modern Penguin series) way too British. For example, petrol in translation for essence harshly inserted another ‘foreign’ word into my American mind. As I saw it, gas would have fit right in and not destroyed the French atmosphere. A similar problem occurred with the translation of le commissaire Maigret. The British translator used Superintendent Maigret whereas Simenon wanted Inspector Maigret. I think Chief Inspector Maigret was (and is) an even better choice, at least for Americans, because it more clearly describes his position within the French police system. I wonder if the translations chosen now consider where the most books will be bought. America or Britain?

On sait que Simenon, quand il écrivait les romans de son commissaire, ne s'embarrassait pas beaucoup de chronologie, et qu'il n'en était pas à une contraction près quand il évoquait la biographie et la carrière de son héros…

Aujourd'hui, à l'occasion de la Saint-Valentin, nous allons illustrer l'une de ces contradictions en nous penchant sur le "cas" de la rencontre entre Louise et Jules. Les premiers événements de la vie commune du couple Maigret sont évoqués çà et là dans les romans, parfois par une simple allusion: la première fois qu'ils se sont embrassés (sur un banc de la place des Vosges, comme Mme Maigret le rappelle dans La folle de Maigret), ou la première fois que Louise a passé son bras sous celui de Jules (au sortir de Carmen, comme Mme Maigret l'évoque dans Les scrupules de Maigret). A noter que ce sont des épisodes dont Mme Maigret se souvient, et qu'elle doit rappeler à son mari, qui semble les avoir oubliés… Attitude masculine typique, doit-on imaginer… ?!

Quoi qu'il en soit, on trouve dans deux romans une relation un peu plus détaillée de ces premiers événements, une fois racontés par Maigret lui-même (dans ses Mémoires), et l'autre par le narrateur dans La première enquête de Maigret. Comme nous allons le voir, les informations données dans ces deux romans ne se recoupent pas complètement, et présentent même quelques éléments contradictoires, dont on ne sait s'il faut les imputer à une défaillance dans les souvenirs de Maigret, ou si c'est Simenon lui-même qui a oublié les détails que lui aurait racontés Maigret, ou qui les aurait réinterprétés à sa convenance…

Menons donc notre enquête, que nous dédions à tous les amoureux et amants de la Saint-Valentin, et à tous nos amis maigretphiles et simenophiles…

Prenons comme point de départ La première enquête de Maigret. L'intrigue débute, comme Simenon le précise, le 15 avril 1913. On apprend que Jules est marié depuis cinq mois, ce qui indique que son mariage doit avoir eu lieu en novembre 1912. Il nous est aussi dit que Maigret est depuis moins d'un an secrétaire au commissariat du quartier Saint-Georges, donc qu'il a été nommé à ce poste au plus tôt après la mi-avril 1912.

Dans ses Mémoires, Maigret affirme que c'est trois semaines après avoir été nommé secrétaire qu'il rencontre son ancien condisciple Félix Jubert, qu'il perd de vue quelques semaines, avant que celui-ci ne l'emmène chez les Léonard, où ont lieu les premiers échanges entre les futurs époux Maigret. Quelques mois passent, et l'explication entre Jules et Félix, à propos de Louise, a lieu en février, puis Maigret continue de fréquenter chez les Léonard, jusqu'à ce qu'ait lieu sa "déclaration". A Pâques, Jules et Louise se rendent chez les parents de celle-ci, à Colmar, et on peut admettre que les fiançailles sont alors officielles; il est encore dit que Maigret a cherché un appartement pendant l'été, en attendant de revoir les parents de Louise en automne, et probablement de se marier à cette époque-là. Autrement dit, il se serait écoulé environ une année et demie depuis leur première rencontre jusqu'à leur mariage, et leurs fiançailles auraient duré quelque chose comme sept ou huit mois.

Si nous mettons maintenant ces faits en regard de ce qui est dit dans La première enquête de Maigret, il apparaît que si l'on pose que le mariage a eu lieu en novembre 1912, la rencontre entre Jules et Louise doit avoir eu lieu au courant de l'année 1911. Or, nous avons vu plus haut que, d'une part, lors de cette rencontre, Jules était déjà secrétaire du commissariat (voir Les mémoires de Maigret) et que, d'autre part, il aurait été nommé à ce poste en avril 1912 (voir La première enquête de Maigret): d'où une flagrante contradiction…

Mais assez pour aujourd'hui. Mettons ces contradictions sur le compte d'une petite défaillance de mémoire, maigretienne ou simenonienne, et quittons-nous avec cette image de la tendresse d'un couple, une tendresse qui ne s'est pas affaiblie, au contraire, à mesure que les années passaient: "Il ne l'appelait pas par son prénom, ni elle par le sien. Elle ne lui disait pas chéri et il ne lui disait par chérie. A quoi bon, puisqu'ils se sentaient en quelque sorte une même personne ?" (Maigret et le fantôme)

No, non è un caso che Simenon Simenon abbia ripreso le pubblicazioni il 13 febbraio di un anno fa', inaugurando la sua versione in tre lingue. Abbiamo volutamente ripartire proprio dal giorno della nascita di Georges Simenon. 

E festeggiare il nostro primo anniversario di Simenon Simenon Internazionale non ci può far dimenticare che precisamente 114 anni fa' nasceva a Liegi quello che sarebbe stato uno dei romanzieri più quotati del novecento ed uno scrittore i cui titoli, dopo quasi un secolo, sono ancora moderni, richiesti e costituiscono addirittura un business per gli editori che, quando oggi li ripubblicano, li vedono scalare le classifiche dei best-seller, come fossero stati editi per la prima volta. 

Non faremo qui un sunto della sua vita e della sua opera, come oggi forse faranno giornali, radio, televisioni e media on line. Noi lo facciamo tutti i giorni, è la nostra mission e la nostra gratificazione, perché, noi di Simenon Simenon siamo tutti appassionati e questo è ormai la nostra droga quotidiana... e anche di quelli che ci seguono.

Quindi buon compleanno a Georges Simenon  che è vivo più che mai con le sue opere e forse un po' anche per questo blog quotidiano cha da oltre sei anni non fà altro che parlare di lui. (m.t.)

Un anno. Oggi Simenon Simenon festeggia un anno dall'inizio della sua versione multilingue; italiano, francese e inglese. Chi ci segue da tempo sa che in realtà Simenon Simenon è nato più di sei anni fa' curato e realizzato dal sottoscritto (sia pur aiutato saltuariamente da vari collaboratori) e così è andato avanti per diversi anni. Poi, dopo una pausa di qualche mese, la grande decisione, non solo continuare ad essere gli unici sul web che dedicavano ogni giorno un post allo scrittore, al suo commissario, alla sua vita e alle sue opere, ma iniziarlo a farlo in varie lingue in modo da dare al blog un connotato internazionale e permettere ad un pubblico più vasto di poterci seguire.Questo ha comportato anche una trasformazione della struttura di Simenon Simenon che infatti da un anno a questa parte deve organizzare dei collaboratori di diverse lingue e nazionalità, programmare i post da pubblicare in modo da alternare i post nelle diverse lingue, realizzare traduzioni, ricercare novità e fatti di attualità, produrre testi in inglese e francese oltre che in italiano.E così questa metamorfosi ha portato in qualche modo a far assomigliare il lavoro di Simenon Simenon a quello di una redazione giornalistica. C'é infatti un lavoro di ricerca che svolgono un po' tutti (ognuno nel proprio paese e/o nella propria area linguistica), c'è un lavoro di programmazione che svolgiamo io e quella che ormai possiamo definire il braccio destro del blog, Murielle Wenger, che si occupa anche del lavoro di collegamento tra tutti i collaboratori, che supervisiona tutto il lavoro e l'organizza materialmente, ci sono i titoli da decidere, l'impostazione dell'archivio, il lavoro di rassegna stampa... Poi ci sono gli autori dei post tra cui citiamo David P Simmons, statunitense, William Alder, inglese che vive in Francia e che scrive indifferentemente in inglese o in francese, Philippe Proost autore francese, la già citata Murielle Wenger, anche lei autrice in francese e occasionalmente in inglese, e poi gli italiani da Andrea Franco a Fulvio Nolli e, tra i più recenti, Fabio Cardetta, Luca Bavassano e Paolo Casadio.

Tutto lavoro possibile, grazie agli strumenti multimediali che il web e la tecnologia digitale ci mette a disposizione e all'utilizzo che questa equipe ne fà quotidianamente

Insomma una squadra vera e propria che realizza questa strana cosa che chiamiamo "blog", ma che va aldilà del significato che normalmente si dà a questo termine. Personalmente penso che stiamo scrivendo con una formula inedita e con gli strumenti più avanzati, una biografia di Georges Simenon, che non è limitata dallo spazio di un libro che per quanto voluminoso ha dei limiti fisici. Da sei anni invece noi andiamo accumulando una dopo l'altra informazioni, memorie storiche, interpretazioni critiche, argomenti affrontati spesso da diversi punti di vista... insomma una biografia realizzata negli anni duemila e che si distingue da tutte le altre non foss'altro per le possibilità che internet mette a disposizione. Simenon Simenon si propone di fare conoscere a più persone possibile (e la versione, diciamo così, internazionale ce lo permette) l'uomo, il romanziere, i suoi personaggi in un operazione, consentitecelo per questo nostro compleanno, culturale e globale, che va nella direzione di unire culture e popoli, perché solo la conoscenza e la comprensione possono costituire una base solida per un riconoscimento ed un rispetto reciproco, togliendo spazio alle incomprensioni, agli scontri e alle discriminazioni.

Forse ho volato un po' troppo alto. Ma rimetto subito i piedi a terra e ringrazio di cuore tutti, quelli che hanno lavorato con me e quelli che ci hanno letto e seguito. E in ultimo consentitemi un attimo di autogratificazione nel dire che... beh sì... Simenon Simenon è proprio una bella idea e si legge davvero con piacere. O no?  Maurizio Testa

Notre blog compte une année depuis le début de la publication des posts en trois langues

Une année. Aujourd'hui Simenon Simenon fête le premier anniversaire de sa version multilingue: italien, français et anglais. Ceux qui nous suivent depuis longtemps savent qu'en réalité Simenon Simenon est né il y a plus de six ans, qu'il a été entretenu et réalisé par les soins du soussigné (mais aidé de temps en temps par divers collaborateurs), et qu'il en a été ainsi pendant plusieurs années. Puis, après une pause de quelques mois, la grande décision, non seulement de continuer à être les seuls sur le web qui dédient un post quotidien à l'écrivain, à son commissaire, à sa vie et à son œuvre, mais encore de commencer à le faire en plusieurs langues, de façon à donner au blog une connotation internationale, et à permettre à un public plus vaste de pouvoir nous suivre.

Ceci a eu pour conséquence une transformation de la structure de Simenon Simenon, pour laquelle il s'agit, depuis une année, de prévoir une organisation des collaborateurs en chaque langue et nationalité, de programmer la publication des posts, de façon à les alterner selon chaque langue, de réaliser des traductions, de rechercher des nouveautés et des faits d'actualité, de produire des textes en anglais et en français en plus de ceux en italien.

C'est ainsi que cette métamorphose a conduit en quelque sorte à faire ressembler le travail de Simenon Simenon à celui d'une rédaction journalistique. En effet, il y a un travail de recherche mené un peu par tous (chacun dans son pays et/ou dans sa propre zone linguistique), il y a un travail de programmation que nous menons, moi-même et celle que nous pouvons désormais définir comme le bras droit du blog, Murielle Wenger, qui s'occupe également du travail de liaison entre tous les collaborateurs, qui supervise tout le travail et l'organise matériellement, qu'il s'agisse des titres à choisir, de l'établissement des archives, ou de la revue de presse… Puis il y a les auteurs des posts: David P. Simmons, des Etats-Unis; William Alder, un Anglais qui vit en France et qui écrit indifféremment en anglais et en français; Philippe Proost, auteur francophone; Murielle Wenger, déjà citée, et qui écrit en français et à l'occasion en anglais; et enfin les Italiens, de Andrea Franco à Fulvio Nolli, et parmi les plus récents Luca Bavassano, Paolo Casadio et Fabio Cardetta.

Tout un travail rendu possible grâce aux outils multimédias que le web et la technologie digitale nous mettent à disposition, et à l'utilisation que cette équipe en fait chaque jour. En somme, une véritable "brigade", qui réalise cette chose étrange que nous appelons "blog", mais qui va au-delà de la signification qu'on donne habituellement à ce terme. Personnellement, je pense que nous sommes en train d'écrire, dans une formule inédite et avec les outils les plus avancés, une biographie de Georges Simenon, qui n'est pas limitée au cadre d'un livre, qui, pour autant volumineux qu'il soit, a des limites physiques. Au contraire, depuis six ans, nous accumulons l'un après l'autre des informations, des souvenirs historiques, des interprétations critiques, des thèmes abordés souvent de divers points de vue… En somme, une biographie réalisée dans les années deux mille, et qui se distingue de toutes les autres, ne serait-ce que par les possibilités qu'internet met à disposition. Simenon Simenon se propose de faire connaître au plus grand nombre possible de lecteurs (et la version, disons, internationale, le permet) l'homme, le romancier, ses personnages, dans une opération, accordez-le nous à l'occasion de cet anniversaire, culturelle et globale, qui va en direction d'unir les cultures et les peuples, parce que seules la connaissance et l'intelligence peuvent constituer une base solide pour une reconnaissance et un respect réciproques, effaçant les incompréhensions, les conflits et les discriminations.

Peut-être me suis-je envolé un peu trop haut. Mais je remets immédiatement les pieds sur terre, et je vous remercie tous du fond du cœur, ceux qui ont travaillé avec moi et ceux qui nous ont lus et suivis. Et enfin, accordez-moi un instant d'autosatisfaction pour dire que… eh bien oui… Simenon Simenon est véritablement une belle idée et on le lit vraiment avec plaisir. N'est-ce pas ?  Maurizio Testa

Our blog has fulfilled one year since it began to publish posts in three languages

One year. Today Simenon Simenon celebrates the first anniversary of its multilingual version: Italian, French and English. Those who have been following us for a long time know that in reality Simenon Simenon was born more than six years ago, and that it had been maintained and achieved by the undersigned (helped from time to time by various collaborators) for several years. Then, after a few months break, the great decision, not only to keep on being the only ones on the web to dedicate a daily post to the writer, to his chief inspector, to his life and works, but also to start doing it in various languages, in order to give an international connotation to the blog, and to allow a wider audience to be able to follow us.

This implied also a transformation in the structure of Simenon Simenon, so that during this year we had to organize the collaborators in every language and nationality, to program the posts in order to alternate them according to each language, to carry out translations, to search for innovations and current events, to produce texts in English and in French, besides those in Italian.

And thus this metamorphosis has led in some way to make the work of Simenon Simenon look like the work of an editorial staff. Actually, there is a research work carried out a bit by all (each one in his own country and/or in his own linguistic area), there is a programming work led by myself and by the one that we may now define as the right arm of the blog, Murielle Wenger, who also takes care of the connection work between all collaborators, who supervises the work and organizes it physically: deciding on titles, archive setting, press review… And then there are the authors of the posts: David P. Simmons from the USA; William Alder, an Englishman who lives in France and writes equally in English and in French; Philippe Proost, a Francophone author; Murielle Wenger, already mentioned, who writes in French and on occasion in English; and finally the Italians, from Andrea Franco to Fulvio Nolli, and among the latest, Luca Bavassano, Paolo Casadio and Fabio Cardetta.

A whole work made possible thanks to the multimedia tools provided by the Web and digital technology, and the daily use of it by our team. As you could say, a real squad, that performs this strange thing we call a "blog", yet it goes beyond the meaning we usually give to this word. Personally, I think that we are in the process of writing, in an original formula and with the most advanced tools, a biography of Georges Simenon, that is not restricted in the framework of a book, which, however voluminous it can be, has its physical limits. On the contrary, for the last six years we have been accumulating one after the other information, historical memories, critical interpretations, topics often discussed from different points of view… in short, a biography created in the 2000s, which is different from all the other biographies, if only because of the possibilities Internet makes available. Simenon Simenon intends to make known, to as many as possible readers (and the so to say international version allows it), the man, the writer, and his characters, in a, please do grant this to us for that anniversary, cultural and global process, that moves toward uniting cultures and peoples, because only knowledge and understanding can provide a solid basis for mutual recognition and respect, erasing misunderstandings, conflicts and discriminations.

Maybe I've been flying a bit too high. Yet I immediately get back down to earth, and I thank you all from the heart, those who have been working with me and those who have been reading and following us. And finally please allow me a moment of complacency by saying that… yes… Simenon Simenon is quite a great idea and you can really read it with pleasure. Can’t you?  Maurizio Testa
