I just started reading an extensive biography about Georges Simenon ― a task avoided for years out of fear I wouldn’t like the man anywhere as much as I liked his works. However, since I am now presuming to write about Simenon for his fans, practicing or merely potential, it behooves me to know much more about him. Whether interpreting or merely introducing his works, both efforts require that the writer be informed. 

Among biographical options for such a project, Pierre Assouline’s Simenon seems the most attractive for two reasons in particular: its reputed thoroughness and accuracy. That the official Simenon website (http://simenon.com/#) is using it to develop a timeline of his life supports this choice. In fact, the book’s epigraph quoting Simenon on biography sets a high bar for Assouline’s own scholarship: “When one writes a biography, either one really tells the truth or else one really makes the biography wrong.” 

My plan is to work through Gallimard’s 1996 edition of a 1000+ pages in French, step by step, sifting out tidbits that might guide Anglophones to better understanding the author and his works. I’m not thinking exhaustive or authoritative. I’m simply thinking informational ― and sometimes quizzical. 

Below, listed alphabetically by subject, are some issues to explore, already commented upon by others: 

Alcoholism: Georges Simenon had the not very enviable distinction of being both a French-type and an American-type alcoholic, switching from the former to the latter in middle age. ―Donald W. Goodwin, MD 

Carnality: Somehow, as well as churning out 393 novels during a highly successful 53-year career, the Belgian author also found the time to make 10,000 sexual conquests. ―Wendy Leigh and Emily Fairbairn 

Collaboration: Some thought Simenon was a collaborator, and he spent a number of years in the United States as an indirect result. ―Bill Alder 

Egotism: Simenon portrays himself as more sinned against than sinning. ―Ann Arensberg 

Exaggeration: Simenon was a relentless self-mythologizer. ―Richard Rayner 

Greed: Nevertheless, the widely held view that he wrote primarily for money infuriated Simenon. ―Joan Acocella 

Homophobia: To know more, Gide cornered him during a cocktail party. Homophobe, Simenon detested that. ―Sorin Raphaël 

Misogyny: His second wife, Denyse Ouimet, suggested that “he had contempt for women,” [but] Simenon refuted charges of misogyny. ―John McIntyre 

Racism: He is also an unqualified antisemite. ―Norman Lebrecht 

Religion: It’s not that he rejects religious belief: he doesn’t even consider it. ―John Gray 

Sanity: He wrote from a compulsion bordering on psychosis. ―Phillip Kay

Ci sono moltissime situazioni in cui non potendo leggere un libro, potremmo optare per un audiolibro. L'esempio più banale è quello della guida dell'auto. Perchè invece di ascoltare musica oppure programmi radiofonici, non ascoltiamo mai la lettura di un libro? Soprattutto in uno di quei viaggi lunghi quando si parte alle prime luci dell'alba e il rosso del tramonto ci coglie ancora con le mani sul volante. 

Ma potremmo fare mille altri esempi: mentre si fa giardinaggio, mentre si disegna, quando si cucina, mentre si è impegnati in lavori noiosi e ripetitivi, quando ci rigiriamo pigramente sul divano incerti se addormentarci o accendere la tv... Ascoltare un romanzo, o meglio ascoltare qualcuno che ci legge un romanzo é uno di quei piaceri cui noi italiani non siamo molto abituati. Ci sono diverse attività che potremmo svolgere impegnando il corpo (e non solo) ascoltando temporaneamente la lettura di un testo narrativo

Comunque, un po' lentamente, ma la cultura dell'ascoltare i libri sta crescendo anche in da noi. E una buona parte di questa spinta la dà la Emons che da 2007 ha deciso di battere questa strada non facile, ma che ora è divenuta una realtà di mercato, con i suoi primi affezionati fans.

Noi ne parliamo perché uno dei pilastri (dal nostro parziale punto di vista) sono le inchieste del commissario Maigret di cui la Emons  ha già pubblicato una decina di titoli.

Il destino ha voluto poi che l'abbinamento tra i Maigret e la voce narrante fosse particolarmente felice. Stiamo parlando dell'attore Giuseppe Battistoni, che ormai é "la voce" di Maigret, come negli anni sessanta Gino Cervi fu la faccia di Maigret.

Da domani in libreria usciranno due nuove inchieste di Maigret in audiolibrio Emons, lette ovviamente da Battiston: Le vacanze di Maigret e Il caso Saint-Fiacre. 

E sono dodici.

I due titoli saranno come al solito disponibili in CD MP3. Sembrerà strano ma in questo caso non si può parlare di pagine ma di durata: 4 ore e 46 minuti il primo e 3 ore e 42 minuti il secondo.

L'accoppiata Battiston-Maigret sta diventando un classico dell'audiolibro e, a nostro avviso, è un fenomeno  cui va dato il giusto risalto. E tra la lettura de  Il Passeggero del Polarlys  e l'ascolto de Il Caso Saint-Fiacre e Le vacanze di Maigret, questa estate per gli appassionati simenoniani non dovrebbe essere poi tanto male! (m.t)

En 1955, à son retour d'Amérique, Simenon s'installe dans le sud de la France. Il y reste deux ans, mais il est à la recherche d'un endroit plus calme, loin des fastes de la Côte d'Azur. En août 1956, il passe des vacances en famille à Villars-sur-Ollon, dans les Alpes vaudoises, où il s'adonne à l'une de ses passions, le golf. Le reporter d'un hebdomadaire suisse, Pour Tous, en profite pour l'interviewer, et le romancier lui confie quelques petits secrets: il a un faible pour la viande séchée des Grisons et pour le "petit vin blanc qui n'a l'air de rien…" (soit dit en passant, une année plus tard, lorsqu'il écrira Maigret voyage, il lui fera goûter le même plat et le commissaire appréciera aussi le vin blanc vaudois…), il adore les marchés, celui de Lausanne et celui de Vevey, et surtout, il aimerait trouver, dit-il, "une maison du XVIIIe siècle, dans l'une des petites rues tranquilles de Vevey, ou encore une belle propriété, pas trop loin du lac". 

En janvier 1957, Simenon vient faire un nouveau séjour en Suisse avec sa famille (ils s'installent au Lausanne-Palace), et commence à prospecter plus activement à la recherche d'une villa dans les environs de Lausanne. Il finit par louer le château d'Echandens, une commune proche de Lausanne, à quelques kilomètres du lac. Simenon déclare, en mai 1957, au journaliste de la Tribune de Lausanne: "Lausanne représente le juste milieu. Pas trop grande ville mais ville quand même. Il y a des librairies chez qui on a envie d'entrer, une université, des médecins réputés (ça peut toujours servir), des cinémas et des théâtres […] Et puis il y a le lac. C'est agréable. Et on est près de tout, de Paris, de Milan, de la Côte d'Azur.".  

Après quelques travaux d'aménagement, les Simenon s'installent au château en juillet 1957. Ils y resteront six ans. Simenon va y écrire 12 Maigret et 13 "romans durs", y rédiger les carnets de Quand j'étais vieux, y accueillir son quatrième enfant, et y vivre les premiers graves déchirements de son couple… 

Les relations de Simenon avec cette demeure ont été à l'image de toute sa vie: une première période où il s'installe, aménage, jusqu'à ce que le "démon de la fuite" le pousse à aller chercher un ailleurs, et les excuses qu'il trouve pour déménager ne sont pas toujours limpides… Simenon appréciait Echandens quand il y vivait, témoin ce qu'il en écrivait dans Quand j'étais vieux: "Echandens s'est arrangé autour de nous en fonction de nous et de chacun. Je m'y sens bien."; "depuis trois ans, je m'évertue à ce que chaque pièce soit parfaite, chaque mur beau à voir, chaque meuble une petite merveille". Mais plus tard, dans ses Dictées, il donnait une autre version: "Je me suis installé enfin en Suisse et ma première demeure a été un vieux château du XVIe siècle, sans beauté, où des meubles modernes n'auraient pas eu leur place. […] Tout était vieillot, désuet. J'ai pourtant vécu six ans dans ce décor…" Paroles contradictoires, à la mesure des contradictions de l'homme… Peut-être la période Echandens peut-elle se résumer comme Simenon l'a fait dans ses Mémoires intimes: "En somme, j'y menais à la fois plusieurs vies. D'abord celle, intime et chaude, exaltante, avec mes jeunes enfants dont je garde des images réconfortantes et savoureuses. […] La seconde concernait évidemment mes rapports avec D., que je sentais se dégrader toujours un peu plus, avec des orages inattendus, des éclaircies, des périodes de grisaille chargées d'une source menace. […] Ma troisième vie découlait du métier choisi, encore adolescent, sans me douter que s'il m'apportait la joie d'écrire, il comportait aussi ce que j'ai considéré comme des devoirs. […]  Ce succès qui m'a été donné a entraîné pour moi des obligations et des devoirs. Je suis devenu, à mon insu, un homme public […]. Entre deux romans, les journalistes se succédaient à un rythme de souvent deux ou trois par semaine; les équipes de télévision, venues de partout, prenaient possession du château avec leur matériel encombrant et leurs équipes de six à dix techniciens." 

Est-ce parce qu'il n'est pas arrivé à concilier vraiment ces "trois vies", que Simenon a menées en parallèle dans ce château, qu'il s'y est senti "au milieu de nulle part", et qu'il a daté tous les romans écrits à cette époque, non pas d'Echandens, mais de "Noland" ?...

A writer with prominence in the Francophone world approaching that of Georges Simenon, Frédéric Dard invites comparison for multiple reasons: he was a prolific writer with an enormous number of publications. The content of his mysteries, thrillers, and detective stories is similar. His writing style is variably different and alike. Detective San-Antonio is as iconic as Chief Inspector Maigret. 

Dard wrote at least 284 books and sold more than 200 million copies in France alone. Exact figures are elusive because Dard used 17 known pen names. His popular San-Antonio series maxed out at 175. There are 28 of his romans de la nuit (literally ‘novels of the night’). Unfortunately, English translations of his works have been few and far between, but this year Anglophones get a chance to compare the two authors, thanks to Pushkin Press. 

Googling uncovered just two of the ‘night’ series and nine San-Antonio novels prior to 2016. Reading the latter works in French provides one explanation for this dearth. They resist English translation because of their neologisms — Dard basically created his own language. In fact, he invented so many words and expressions there is a French San-Antonio dictionary with 15,000 entries in 631 pages. The New York Times claimed he “used 200-odd different words for men's sexual anatomy and another 200-odd for women's.” The British author James Kirkup said, ''His prose style is so individual, so slangy and often so very improper in its demented vocabulary that I wonder how anyone could transform it into acceptable English.'' 

In contrast, Pushkin editor and Dard translator Daniel Seton states “the ‘novels of the night’ are less reliant on that kind of wordplay, although his use of language is still very effective in them.” In fact, David Bellos, who has translated both authors, refers to “the extraordinary efficiency of their language. Using a very small vocabulary and a limited grammatical repertoire, they create characters, settings, atmospheres and narrative suspense out of almost nothing. Their styles are so unpretentious, stark and simple that you read these things as fast as they were written – and there’s a great deal of art in that.” 

Indeed, their stylistic considerations may have traveled on a two-way street. Dard was Simenon’s “close friend” although 18 years his junior, according to theguardian.com. The publisher of the imminent English translations, Pushkin Press states that Dard was “greatly influenced by the great Georges Simenon. The two entered into a correspondence when Dard was just 16 years old. A mutual respect developed between the two, and eventually Simenon agreed to let Dard adapt one of his books for the stage in 1953.”

Simenon’s latest novel published in Italy to date joins the most sold books ranking.

Erano parecchi anni che questo eroe simenoniano era in viaggio. Il passeggero del Polarlys  infatti era uscito l'ultima volta in Italia ben cinquant'anni fa'. Era infatti il 1966 quando fu pubblicato dalla Arnoldo Mondadori  Editore negli Omnibus, nella colllana dedicata a Simenon, nel volume Romanzi polizieschi e di guerra.
Beh il viaggio è stato lungo, ma il "passeggero" è arrivato putuale come  titolo simenoniano dell'estate . Uscito infatti a fine giugno la sua vocazione di lettura vacanziera é inequivocabile.
Sarà stata questa lunga (... lunghissima) attesa a far conquistare i posti di di rilievo nelle classifiche dei libri più venduti? Oppure è il fatto di essere quella lettura estiva cui i lettori di Simenon non rinunciano? Oppure.... beh, ogni volta che cerchiamo una spiegazione specifica, alla fine ci dobbiamo arrendere al fatto che questo succede a tutti i titoli simenoniani , in qualsiasi periodo dell'anno escano e il motivo è quello più semplice del mondo.
Piacciono.
E allora dopo una decina di giorni dalla sua uscita, la classifica dell'inserto TuttoLibri de La Stampa di ieri ce lo presenta nella 5a posizione della "Narrativa Straniera".  Nell'odierno supplemento La Lettura del Corriere della Sera la classifica dei libri più venduti piazza Il passeggero del Polarlys al 10° posto sempre nella  "Narrativa Straniera".

E adesso andiamo a vedere cosa succede nel settore dei libri venduti on-line. Nella "Top 10" di Internet Book Shop il romanzo di Simenon è nella parte alta della classifica, e più prcisamente al 5° posto. Anche in quella di Feltrinelli.it è ben posizionato visto che Il "passeggero" naviga in 9a posizione. Nella classifica di Giunti il titolo simenoniano si piazza in 15a posizione della sezione Narrativa.
Questo succede a dieci giorni circa dall'uscita. Vedremo la prossima settimana cosa ci riserverà questo romanzo. (m.t.)
