The writing enigmas of the first novels in the Maigret saga

Dans cette nouvelle rubrique, nous allons faire un petit tour d'horizon des énigmes non encore résolues à propos des dates de rédaction des premiers romans Maigret. Nous allons faire le point sur les recherches menées jusqu'à présent, et sur les solutions que les bibliographes ont proposées.

In this new column we'll do a small overview of unsolved enigmas about the writing dates of the first Maigret novels. We'll review the research conducted so far, and the solutions proposed by bibliographers.

Le Pendu de Saint-Pholien

Si la date de rédaction (été 1930) pour Le Charretier de la « Providence » et Monsieur Gallet, décédé semble faire l'unanimité parmi les chercheurs, il n'en est pas de même pour Le Pendu de Saint-Pholien. La date mentionnée pour ce roman dans le volume Rencontre est aussi l'été 1930, donc au temps où Simenon était amarré sur son bateau l'Ostrogoth à Morsang. Menguy avait d'abord proposé de décaler la date de rédaction à l'automne de la même année, lorsque le romancier avait rejoint Concarneau pour y écrire la série de romans populaires exigés par Fayard, en échange de son accord pour publier la nouvelle collection Maigret. Plus tard, la date a encore été un peu corrigée, car on a découvert que c'était plutôt en hiver 1930-31 que Simenon s’installa dans une villa à Beuzec-Conq, près de Concarneau. Mais comme rien n'est complètement avéré, l'édition Tout Maigret 2019 d’Omnibus ne tranche pas et propose une rédaction possible entre l'été 1930 et décembre de la même année. Quelle que soit la date que l'on privilégie, ce roman est reconnu pour être le quatrième dans l'ordre de rédaction.

L’Impiccato di Saint-Pholien

Se la data di redazione (estate 1930) per ll carrettiere della Provvidenza » e Il signor Gallet defunto sembra mettere d’accordo tutti i ricercatori, non è lo stesso per L’impiccato di Saint-Pholien. La data indicata per questo romanzo nel volume Rencontre è l’estate 1930, cioè quando Simenon aveva attraccato con il suo battello Ostrogoth a Morsang. Menguy aveva dapprima proposto di spostare la data di redazione all’autunno dello stesso anno, quando il romanziere aveva raggiunto Concarneau per scrivere lì la serie di romanzi popolari che Fayard esigeva in cambio dell’accordo per pubblicare la nuova serie di Maigret. Più tardi quella data ha subito una piccola correzione, perchè si è scoperto che era nell’inverno 1930-31 che Simenon si installò in una villa a Beuzec-Conq, vicino a Concarneau. Ma siccome niente non è completamente provato, l’edizione Tout Maigret 2019 di Omnibus non decide e propone una redazione possibile tra l’estate del 1930 e dicembre dello stesso anno. Quale che sia la data che si scelga, questo romanzo è conosciuto per essere il quarto in ordine di scrittura.

The Hanged Man of Saint-Pholien

The writing date (summer 1930) for The Carter of La Providence and The Late Monsieur Gallet seems to achieve unanimity among researchers, whereas it's not the case for The Hanged Man of Saint-Pholien. The date given for this novel in the Rencontre edition is also summer 1930, thus at the time when Simenon was aboard his boat l'Ostrogoth in Morsang. Menguy first proposed to shift the writing date to autumn in the same year, when the novelist settled to Concarneau to write the popular novels demanded by Fayard in exchange for his agreement to publish the new Maigret collection. Later on, the date had been slightly corrected again, because the researchers found out that it was rather in winter 1930-1931 that Simenon settled in a villa in Beuzec-Conq, near Concarneau. Yet as nothing is really totally proved, the 2019 Tout Maigret edition from Omnibus doesn't decide for one or the other solution, and it proposes a possible writing between summer 1930 and December in the same year. Whatever the date favoured, this novel is acknowledged to be the fourth in the chronological writing order.
