The Times - 19/11/2015 - Tom Whipple - Georges Simenon, author of the Maigret novels, was one of history’s great lotharios. Starting at the age of 13, he claimed to have slept with 10,000 women, but declared himself unfulfilled. “I literally suffered from knowing that there were millions of women in the world that I would never know,” he wrote. If only the latest research had come out sooner he would have realised he was wasting his time — because it turns out that sex once a week is quite enough.Researchers said that happiness increases with the frequency of sexual congress, but only up to a point. So when John Updike said “sex is like money; only too much is enough”, he was wrong. The scientists calculated that happiness created by sex plateaus beyond a frequency of once a week. Their report, published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, is based on the love lives of 30,000 people. “Popular messages in the media often imply that engaging in more frequent sex is better for relationship quality,” wrote Amy Muise, from the University of Toronto. “In one example, an article in The New York Times reported on two couples who ‘kick-started their marriage’ by having sex every day for a year.” She wanted to see if, contrary to such messages, a nice hot chocolate and watching something on Netflix could be just as fulfilling of an evening...>>>
