Maigret’s Childhood Friend, Penguin’s English translation of Simenon’s L‘Ami d’enfance de Maigret became available through Amazon.co.uk on July 4, 2019 in both paperback and Kindle editions. Delivery to the USA is available, which is fortunate because the paperback and Kindle edition through Amazon.com will not available until March 3, 2020.

July 4, 2019 was also the release date from the following other Amazon sources: Australia Kindle; France paperback and Kindle; Germany paperback and Kindle; India Kindle; Italy paperback and Kindle; Mexico paperback; Netherlands Kindle; Spain paperback and Kindle.

September 17, 2019 is the release date for the paperback in Australia.

March 3, 2020 is the release date from these other Amazon sources: Brazil paperback and Kindle; Canada paperback and Kindle; India paperback; Japan paperback and Kindle; Mexico Kindle.

The paperback does not appear to be forthcoming through Amazon sites in China or  Netherlands.

L’Ami d’enfance de Maigret originally appeared in 1968. The first English translation came out as Maigret’s Boyhood Friend in 1970. Six subsequent editions followed through 2003, all with the same title. The translator for all was Eileen Ellenbogen, and the translator for this new Penguin edition is Shaun Whiteside.

Be aware the ISBN-13 for this most recent edition is 978-0241304235, which should facilitate searching for this exact book from various other sources.

The original work was the 97th in Simenon’s order of publication, and this work is the 69th in Penguin’s modern series of translations.

This novel is intriguing because the Chief Inspector has to pick out a murderer from five suspects and he uses a group confrontation to finally ferret out the culprit. One happens to have been a schoolmate of Maigret, so childhood memories surface as he investigates. Murder is the primary crime, but robbery and blackmail come into play as well.
