JANVIER  

Quand il apparaît pour la première fois dans la saga (La tête d'un homme), Janvier est un jeune inspecteur de 25 ans, encore maladroit. Maigret a pour lui une affection paternelle: "En dehors de Lucas – son bras droit – Janvier avait toujours été son inspecteur favori. Il l'avait eu avec lui tout gamin, comme maintenant Lapointe, et il lui arrivait encore de l'appeler le petit Janvier." (Maigret en meublé). La famille de Janvier a une certaine importance dans la saga, et au fil du temps, on apprend son mariage, puis la naissance successive de ses enfants. Janvier apparaît dans 51 romans et 10 nouvelles. Décrit comme un long garçon mince, il est blond ou roux selon les romans. Parmi les acteurs qui ont interprété le rôle, on peut mentionner Jean-François Devaux et Jean-Pierre Maurin pour la série avec Jean Richard; Jean-Claude Frissung dans la série avec Bruno Crémer; Jack Galloway dans la série avec Michael Gambon; Daniele Tedeschi dans la série avec Gino Cervi; Shaun Dingwall dans les téléfilms avec Rowan Atkinson.

Maigret ha per lui un affetto paterno: «Al di fuori di Lucas – il suo braccio destro – Janvier era sempre stato il suo ispettore preferito. Era arrivato lì da lui ancora ragazzino, come ora Lapointe, e gli capitava ancora di chiamarlo il piccolo Janvier." (Maigret e l'affittacamere). La famiglia di Janvier ha una certa importanza nella serie e, nel corso del tempo, si viene a sapere delle sue nozze, poi della nascita successiva dei suoi bambini. Janvier appare in 51 romanzi e 10 racconti. Descritto come un alto ragazzo smilzo è biondo o rosso a seconda dei romanzi.
