Une silhouette coiffée d'un chapeau et enveloppée dans un énorme pardessus à col de velours… C'est ainsi que Maigret apparaît sous la plume de son créateur. Né au seuil des années 1930, Maigret ne peut être vêtu que du costume inhérent aux hommes de sa génération et de son époque. Il revêt donc un veston, porté sur un gilet et une chemise blanche. Et son pantalon, qui lui monte «jusqu'à mi-hauteur de la poitrine» (Maigret chez le coroner) est obligatoirement maintenu par des bretelles.  

Une fois décrit dans ce costume, malgré une chronologie de rédaction qui s'étire sur plus de quarante ans, Maigret ne saurait guère évoluer dans son habillement. Tout au plus abandonne-t-il le chapeau melon pour un feutre mou, le faux-col pour une chemise à col intégré, et peut-être, tout à la fin de sa carrière littéraire, le gilet, passé de mode à la fin des années '60, lorsque sont écrits les derniers romans de la saga.  

Mais, pour le reste, pas plus que Maigret ne change dans sa façon de mener ses enquêtes, il ne pourra porter autre chose qu'un veston, des bretelles et un pardessus, parce qu'il reste, fondamentalement, un personnage ancré dans la France de l'entre-deux-guerres, ou celle de l'après-guerre. Une fois dessiné dans ce costume, le commissaire devra nécessairement garder une même silhouette, une même allure vestimentaire, et il continuera à se mouvoir en chemise et en cravate. 

Pourrait-on imaginer, dans une nouvelle adaptation, qu'on propose un Maigret plus "moderne", portant pull à col roulé, veston de cuir, ou même T-shirt ? Impensable… non que cela soit choquant en soi, mais parce que le costume du héros, tel que son créateur l'a conçu et tel que le lecteur l'imagine, ne fait pas que l'habiller: il le désigne et il l'identifie…

Nato alla soglia degli anni 1930, Maigret non può che essere vestito in un abbigliamento consono agli uommini della sua generazione e della sua epoca. Indossa quindi una giacca, su un gilet e una camicia bianca. E i suoi pantaloni, che lui porta alti « fino alla metà del petto » (Maigret chez le coroner), sono necessariamente tenuti su dalle bretelle. 

Una volta descritto in questo abbigliamento, con una cronologia della scrittura che dovrebbe riferirsi su per giù ai quarant’anni, Maigret difficilmente potrà evolvere nel suo modo di vestire. Tutt’al più abbandonerà il capello a bombetta, per un feltro morbido, il colletto finto, per il normale collo di una camicia, e forse, proprio alla fine della sua carriera letteraria, il gilet, passato di moda negli anni ’60, quando sono stati scritti gli ultimi titoli della serie.  

Ma per il resto, come non cambia modo di condurre le sue inchieste, non potrà che indossare una giacca, delle bretelle, un cappotto, perché fondamentalmente resta un personaggio ancorato alla Francia tra le due guerrre mondiali, o a quella del dopo-guerra. Una volta raffigurato in questo abbigliamento, il commissario dovrà conservare la stessa silhouette, lo stesso tipo di abbigliamento e continuerà a presentarsi in camicia e cravatta. 

Si potrebbe immaginare in un nuovo adattamento, che si proponga un Maigret più « moderno », portando  pullover con il collo a dolce vita, giacche di cuoio, o addirittura T-shirt ? Impensabile… non che questo sia scioccante in sé, ma perchè il costume del protagonista, quale il suo creatore l’ha concepito, e quale il lettore lo immagina, non lo veste solamente: lo disegna e lo identifica….

A silhouette wearing a hat and wrapped in a heavy overcoat with a velvet collar… Thus Maigret appeared under his creator's pen. Born at the threshold of the '30s, Maigret couldn't but be dressed in the outfit appropriate to men of his generation and his time. Thus he wore a jacket, over a waistcoat and a white shirt. And his trousers, that went "up to mid-chest height" (Maigret at the Coroner's), had inevitably to be held by suspenders. 

Once depicted in this suit, despite a writing chronology that stretched over more than forty years, Maigret could hardly evolve in his clothing. At best he could put aside the bowler hat and wear a fedora instead; get rid of the false collar and have from then on shirts with integral collars; and maybe, at the very end of his literary career, give up the waistcoat, that had become old-fashioned at the end of the '60s, at the time the last novels of the series were written. 

As well as Maigret didn't change his way of leading enquiries, he wouldn't wear anything else than a jacket, suspenders and an overcoat, for he basically remained a character anchored in the inter-war or after-war France. Once drawn in this suit, the chief inspector had necessarily to keep the same silhouette, a same clothing look, and he kept moving on in shirt and tie.  

Could you imagine, in a new movie adaptation, being proposed a more "modern" Maigret, wearing a turtleneck sweater, a leather jacket, or even a T-shirt? Unthinkable… not because that would be shocking, but because the hero's suit, such as his creator conceived it and as the reader pictures it, doesn't just dress him: it identifies and marks him out…
