Maigret se défend originally appeared in 1964. It came out in English translation as Maigret on the Defensive in 1966 with five subsequent reprints through 1987. The translator then was Alastair Hamilton, and the translator for this new Penguin edition is Howard Curtis.
The original work was the 91st in Simenon’s order of publication, and this work is the 63rd in Penguin’s modern series of translations.
This novel puts Maigret in a unique situation: accused of an alcohol fueled, hotel room assault on a teenage woman, the Chief Inspector is called on the carpet for the first time in his long career. Although forbidden to confront his accuser and investigate the claim in any way, he does get to read her formal complaint. He then sets out boldly to defend himself, combining his own cunning with help enlisted from both sides of the law: multiple police associates and his friend and doctor Pardon plus a pimp turned gang leader, and a prostitute turned mistress, etc.
