SIMENON SIMENON.

Maigret seen by Simenon, extracts from interviews

In May 1962 the Swiss weekly newspaper Pour tous began the serial publication of Maigret voyage. On that occasion they published an interview with Simenon, which was mainly about Maigret. Here's an extract, in which we can feel that reconciliation between the novelist and his hero, the first seeing in the second much more than a mere policeman character…
"Maigret is above all human and a good guy. He's a middle-class man, as there are thousands in Paris and elsewhere. Besides he's the first professional policeman to be the hero in a novel, and a rather sympathetic hero… You can note that he never judges, he's never angry against those he has to arrest."
