SIMENON SIMENON. MAIGRET'S PORTRAIT
Maigret seen by Simenon, extracts from interviews
Maigret got gradually closer to his creator (or vice versa…), the novelist giving to his character some of his own questionings about life, and drawing a comparison between himself and his character. Thus in an interview of December 1969 for the newspaper La tribune de Lausanne, Simenon made those comments.
"Maigret would like to live all lives, but as he can live but one, he's passionate about others. Each time he begins an investigation, he discovers a new environment, a new life he takes part in. It's also the case for the novelist, who feels the need to live several lives. As he becomes identified to each of his characters, he knows as much lives in addition to his own one."
