La tête d'un homme / Una testa in gioco / A Man's Head

Comment This almost dostoevskian novel, with Radek as a very strong character, could not fail to arouse the adapters' interest. Probably it's the reason why this is the novel that has been most adapted. The 1933 film has its supporters, but also his detractors (the same is true for Harry Baur's interpretation). The filming is rather surprising: the beginning of the film is very close to the novel, but then little by little it gets away from it, and in the end, it is almost another story that is told… And you have to admit that the hero in the film is not Maigret, but Radek, powerfully played by Valéry Inkijinoff.
As for The Man on the Eiffel Tower, all in all, this is a rather surprisingly faithful adaptation... with the few unavoidable modifications, among them the famous final scene, the pursuit on the Eiffel Tower, which, as gripping as it is, is no doubt a little too Hollywood-style for a Maigret… The film is worth a look, even if only for the shooting in the real Paris of the end of the 40s… It's almost a documentary!
