La Patience de Maigret originally appeared in 1965. It came out in English translation as Maigret Bides His Time in 1966 with eight subsequent reprints through 1993. Some editions were entitled The Patience of Maigret. The translator then was Alastair Hamilton, and the translator for this new Penguin edition is David Watson.
The original work was the 92nd in Simenon’s order of publication, and this work is the 64th in Penguin’s modern series of translations.
This novel follows Maigret Defends Himself by one month in Penguin’s publication order, but this case follows the related case by just ten days. All of a sudden, the odd couple that had materially helped the Chief Inspector exonerate himself earlier is now dramatically transformed. Both become ‘uncooperative.’ Manuel Palmari, a Maigret target and informant for many years, gets murdered in his apartment where he is housebound. Aline Bauche, his long-term caretaker and mistress, does not help at all in fingering the assassin. Not only does Maigret succeed in solving the crime, but he also gets the spin-off satisfaction of at last learning all about his elusive ‘friend’ and the grieving ‘widow.’
