Notre cadeau pour la Saint-Valentin

SIMENON SIMENON. QUANDO LOUISE INCONTRÒ JULES...
Il nostro regalo per San Valentino
SIMENON SIMENON. WHEN LOUISE MET JULES...
Our gift for Valentine's Day

Et puis, ceux qu'on me présentait n'étaient guère intéressants…

In his Memories, Maigret told his first meeting with Mme Maigret. Today, for Valentine's Day, we offer you the story of this meeting according to his wife.

How many parties have already been organized by aunt Géraldine? I knew well that the purpose was to find a husband for me in the "Ponts et Chaussées", but I was getting tired of seeing the same faces, and I felt like an object used for a lottery…
And men who were introduced to me were not so interesting… There was Ernest, who always seemed about to burst out in his too tight evening suit. And these so boring sonatas he persisted in playing piano evening after evening! As for Félix… I don't like making fun of people, but this long skinny boy, with his face always smeared with ointment, didn't attract me at all. I had understood he was in love with me, but I swear I had done everything not to encourage him. There was also Louis, who thought only of waltzing and tightly clasping his partner. I hated that, but luckily he had felt in love with Alice, and I was rid of him. And also Barnabé; I had nothing against the fact that he was wearing glasses, but he was spending his time declaiming poems that no one could understand.
On that evening I had been about to pretend I had a headache to escape the chore, but it was difficult to lie to aunt Géraldine. At half past eight, while I was bravely turning the pages of the eternal sonata played by Ernest, I saw them entering. Félix was accompanied by a thin but solid young man, and I thought this one could gain a few pounds and thicken, some years later on. I don't know why, I was pleased to imagine him stout, even massive, and so as not to show everybody that I was blushing at the thought, I turned around and I began coughing.
Jules – I already knew it was his name, for Felix had talked about him on previous evening – seemed uneasy in his suit, and I found him touching, above all when we were introduced and he didn't dare face me. Ernest had begun to play the next sonata. From afar I watched Jules, and I saw he was heading towards a pedestal table on which stood a tray with petits fours. At last Ernest played the last chords, and my torture came to an end. When Alice had finished singing, there was a big silence, and all people were gazing at Jules, who had his mouth full and was holding a cupcake.
Luckily the entrance of the maid with the refreshments made diversion, and I managed to get noticed by aunt Géraldine when I took the last petits fours tray. She told me to pass the tray, and when everybody was eating, I got near to Jules and I told him, showing the pineapple tartlets: "They left the best ones. Taste those." And Jules found nothing else to answer: "Do you believe so?" Maybe other girls would have found this ridiculous and would have burst out laughing, but I would have liked to kiss him.
It was the first time, on that evening, that I was happy my mother had given me her gift for cooking, because I was sure that this young man, who was hiding his embarrassment in gluttony, would like to be made good food. As for me, I better saw my future in the kitchen of a cosy apartment, rather than giving parties to all these so deadly boring Ponts et Chaussées
