AN UNFAITHFUL TRANSLATOR

About Geoffrey Sainsbury's translations of the Maigret novels
  A TRADUCTEUR INFIDELE

In 1939 Simenon decided to find new anglophone publishers. He signed with Routledge, who released 15 Maigret (published in double editions) and 25 "romans durs", up to the mid-'50s. Some of these novels were translated by Geoffrey Sainsbury, and in particular ten Maigret: A Battle of Nerves and A Face for a Clue (in "The patience of Maigret"), A Crime in Holland and At the "Gai-Moulin" (in "Maigret abroad"), Guinguette by the Seine and The Flemish Shop (in "Maigret to the rescue"), The Madman of Bergerac and Liberty Bar (in " Maigret Travels South"), To Any Lengths and A Summer Holiday (in "Maigret on Holiday").
As Assouline tells in his biography, Simenon appreciated Sainsbury, for he had brought the novelist in contact with Routledge, and therefore had taken part in the ensuing success in England. But Sainsbury's vanity pushed him to overstep his work as a translator, and he went so far as "reinterpreting" Simenon's texts. He allowed himself to bring modifications, and not only for details: he altered the plots and the characters' psychology. Of course, he submitted them to the author's approval, and Simenon was always agreeing, because at that time, he didn't speak English…
But later on, once settled in America, Simenon learned this language, and he decided to check the translations. Then he realized that Sainsbury had taken a large liberty in his translation work. Simenon got angry and broke relations with him, and soon after, he left Routledge and signed with Hamish Hamilton, who committed new translators.

However, Hamilton had acquired the rights for the Maigret other than those of the Fayard series, and for these ones Sainsbury's translations, despite their flaws, kept being used for a long time… This was the case for American publications (Harcourt, Brace and Co., then Harvest), and also for Penguin, when this publisher had bought back the rights from Routledge. Thus, until the '90s, and the early 2000s for some editions, Sainsbury's translations were still effective for eight Maigret, even if some titles had changed: A man's head, Maigret in Holland, Maigret at the Gai-Moulin, Maigret and the Tavern by the Seine, Maigret and the Flemish Shop, The Madman of Bergerac, Maigret on the Riviera, Maigret and the Fortuneteller. While Maigret and the Yellow Dog and Maigret on Holiday could benefit earlier from a new translation, the other novels had to wait until 2013 and the new Penguin collection for texts in a renewed version… (by Simenon Simenon)

(by Simenon Simenon

L'ENIGME DE MAIGRET

SIMENON SIMENON. THE MAIGRET RIDDLE

A little game for the Maigret fans

Enigme no 6
