Maigret a accompagné pendant plus de quarante ans son créateur, dans sa vie de romancier, et même au delà, lorsque Simenon s'est fait mémorialiste. Le succès aidant, il a été sollicité dans maintes interviews pour donner son point de vue sur son personnage. Sa relation à Maigret a évolué au fil des années, et ce qu'il en a dit aussi. Dans cette nouvelle rubrique, nous vous proposons de découvrir ce que Simenon a raconté sur son commissaire, avec des citations extraites d'interviews. Nous allons suivre la piste dans l'ordre chronologique, afin de déceler cette évolution des relations entre créateur et créature. 

A l'époque du lancement de la collection Maigret, Simenon, dans ses premières interviews, évoque surtout son évolution littéraire; c'est de lui-même qu'il parle, et encore fort peu de son personnage, qu'il voit essentiellement comme une sorte de "rampe de lancement". S'il a eu le génie de fabriquer un détective hors des normes alors en vigueur, il n'en est peut-être pas encore très conscient à ce moment-là.

La première citation que nous avons choisie remonte au mois d'avril 1932, lorsque, dans le journal Paris-Soir, Simenon donne ses impressions à la veille de la première du film La nuit du carrefour. C'est là qu'il raconte une première version de la naissance de son héros. 

"J'étais tourmenté par le désir de créer un policier français, bien français, ne mettant pas son orgueil à réussir des mots croisés ni à bondir par-dessus les meubles, ni à assommer ses plus terribles adversaires d'une chiquenaude. […] Les éditeurs étaient effrayés par ce terrible commissaire qui n'était même pas un jeune premier, ni un devin, ni un colosse, et qui voulait faire une enquête tous les mois."

Maigret ha accompagnato per più di quarant’anni il suo creatore nella sua vita di romanziere, e anche al di là, quando Simenon è diventato memorialista. In conseguenza del suo successo è stato sollecitato da numerose interviste a dare il suo punto di vista del personaggio. La sua relazione con il personaggio si è evoluta nel corso degli anni, e anche quello che ha detto di lui. In questa nuova rubrica vi proponiamo di scoprire quello che Simenon racconta del suo commissario attraverso delle citazioni estratte da interviste. Seguiremo la pista dell’ordine cronologico, nell’intento di rilevare questa evoluzione di relazioni tra creatore e creatura. 

All’epoca del lancio della collezione Maigret, Simenon nelle sue prime interviste evoca soprattutto la sua evoluzione letteraria, è di sé stesso che parla e ancora molto poco del suo personaggio, che vede come una rampa di lancio. Se ha avuto il genio di costruire un detective fuori dai cliché allora in voga, può darsi che non sia ancora cosciente in quel momento.

La prima citazione che abbiamo scelto risale al mese di aprile 1932, quando nel quotidiano Paris-Soir, Simenon fornisce le sue impressioni alla vigilia del debutto del film La nuit du carrefour. E in quel momento che racconta una prima versione della nascita del suo eroe. 

«Ero tormentato dal desiderio di creare un poliziotto francese, davvero francese, che non metteva il suo «must» nel risolvere cruciverba, nè nel saltare sopra i mobili, o ad abbattere i suoi più terribili avversari con una schicchera. […]. Gli edittori erano colpiti da questo terribile commissario che non era comunque un giovanotto, né un indovino, né un colosso, e che voleva fare un’inchiesta tutti i mesi».

Maigret had been accompanying his creator for more than forty years, in his novelist life, and even beyond, when Simenon had become a memoirist. Once success being there, he'd been asked in many interviews to give his point of view about his character. His relationship to Maigret had been evolving over time, and also what he'd been saying about him. In this new column we'll propose you to discover what Simenon told about his chief inspector, with quotations extracted from interviews. We'll follow the track in chronological order, so that we can detect this evolution in the relationship between the creator and his creature. 

At the time of the launch of the Maigret collection, Simenon, in his first interviews, talked mostly about his literary evolution; he spoke about himself, and still hardly little about his character, whom he mainly saw as a kind of "launching pad". Even if he had the genius for creating a detective that was outside the then current standards, maybe he wasn't aware of it at that time.

The first quotation we've chosen goes back to April 1922, when Simenon, in the Paris-Soir newspaper, gave his impressions just before the movie premiere of La nuit du carrefour. Thus he told a first version about his hero's birth.  

"I was tormented by the desire to create a French policeman, very French, not putting his pride to make a success of crosswords or to jump up over furniture, nor to knock down his strongest enemies with a flick. […] Publishers were frightened by this terrible chief inspector, who wasn't even a romantic young man, nor a soothsayer, nor a colossus, and who wanted to make an investigation on every month."
