Nous inaugurons aujourd'hui une nouvelle rubrique mensuelle, où "3D" signifie 3 DÉCLINAISONS, qui se réfèrent à la version écrite, à la version télévisée et à la version cinématographique d'un roman de Simenon. Cette rubrique illustre les rapports entre le roman et les productions pour le grand et le petit écran. 

Inauguriamo oggi una nuova rubrica mensile dove 3D significa 3 DECLINAZIONI che si riferiscono alla versione scritta, a quella televisiva e a quella cinematografica di un romanzo di Simenon. Questa rubrica illustra i rapporti tra il romanzo e le produzioni per il grande e il piccolo schermo. 

Today we initiate a new monthly column, in which "3D" means 3 DECLINATIONS, what refers to the written version, the TV version and the movie version of a novel by Simenon. This column illustrates the relationship between the novels and the productions for the small and the big screen.

• Fiche du roman C’est un roman écrit par Simenon au milieu de sa "période américaine", soit en 1950. L'intrigue se déroule à Pigalle, un des endroits de Paris mythiques et favoris du romancier. Maigret est à la recherche du meurtrier d'une jeune strip-teaseuse, Arlette, et le commissaire va passer une grande partie de son temps à enquêter dans un cabaret montmartrois, faisant connaissance avec le "monde de la nuit".

• Scheda del romanzo E’ un romanzo di Simenon scritto nel bel mezzo del suo «periodo americano», cioè nel 1950. La vicenda si svolge a Pigalle, uno dei mitici luoghi di Parigi e preferiti dal romanziere. Maigret è alla ricerca dell’assassino di una giovane spogliarellista, Arlette, e il commissario passerà gran parte del suo tempo ad indagare in un cabaret di Montmartre, facendo conoscenza del «mondo di notte».

The plot is taking place in Pigalle, one of the novelist's mythic and favourite Parisian places. Maigret is looking for he murderer of a young stripper, Arlette, and the Chief Inspector spends much of his time investigating in a Montmartre cabaret, getting acquainted with the "world of night".

Commentaire Pourquoi ce succès ? Probablement parce que le lieu de l'enquête est très représentatif pour qui veut raconter une enquête de Maigret sur l'écran, et que planter un décor dans un cabaret de Pigalle permet l'évocation de tout un monde qui parle à la mémoire des (télé)spectateurs. Mais aussi, peut-être, parce que, pour celui qui lit le roman, le lien qui se crée entre Maigret et Arlette, par-delà la mort, est quelque chose de fascinant. Encore que, dans ce cas, cette relation qu'on découvre à la lecture n'est peut-être pas si évidente que cela de rendre à l'écran, et en réalité, c'est plutôt le thème de la "chasse à l'homme" qui sera mis en avant dans les adaptations, parce que sans doute plus facile à montrer.  

Un autre point important dans le roman est l'implication de l'inspecteur Lapointe dans l'affaire (il est amoureux d'Arlette), un point qui n'a pas été retenu dans le film avec Gino Cervi. Dans ce film, par ailleurs, le meurtrier d'Arlette n'est pas le même que dans le roman, un changement d'optique qui a aussi été utilisé dans le téléfilm de la série avec Bruno Crémer.  

Commento Perchè questo successo? Probabilmente perché il luogo dell’inchiesta è molto rappresentativo per chi vuole raccontare un’inchiesta di Maigret sullo schermo e perchè allestire la scena in un cabaret di Pigalle permette di evocare tutto un mondo che parla alla memoria dei (tele)spettatori. Ma anche forse perché, per chi legge il romanzo, il legame che si crea tra Maigret e Arlette, al di là della morte, è qualche cosa di affascinante. Anche se, in questo caso, questa relazione che si scopre leggendo non è forse così evidente da restituire sullo schermo, e in realtà è piuttosto il tema della «caccia all’uomo» che sarà messo in primo piano negli adattamenti, perchè senza dubbio più facile da replicare sullo schermo.  

Un altro punto importante del romanzo, è l’implicazione dell’ispettore Lapointe nel caso (è innamorato di Arlette), un aspetto che non è stato considerato nel film con Gino Cervi. In questo film, d’altronde, l’assassino di Arlette non è lo stesso del romanzo, un cambiamento di ottica che è stato utilizzato anche nel telefilm della serie con Bruno Crémer. 

Comment Why this success? Probably because the place of the investigation is very representative when you want to tell a Maigret investigation on the screen, and also because if you set the scene in a cabaret at Pigalle, you can describe a world which is very evocative to the (TV)spectators' memory. But also maybe because, when you read the novel, the relationship that is created between Maigret and Arlette, beyond death, is fascinating. Though in this case this relationship you find by reading is not so obviously easy to express on the screen, and in fact it's rather the theme of "manhunt" that will be highlighted in the adaptations, no doubt because it's easier to show.  

Another important point in the novel is Inspector Lapointe's involvement in the case (he is in love with Arlette), something that was not held in the film with Gino Cervi. Moreover in this film Arlette's murderer is not the same as in the novel, a shift in focus which was also used in the episode of the Bruno Crémer series.
