SIMENON SIMENON.

In July 1932 the novel Libery Bar is published. This is the seventeenth novel in the Fayard series, and literary critics had had time to get to know Maigret, this "outsized" policeman. In the newspaper Les Nouvelles littéraires of August 20, 1932, René Lalou (who was one of the first critics to show his admiration for the Maigret novels), gave his point of view on Maigret, a character whose his creator had already had time to develop the psychology and the way of leading an investigation…
"Chief Inspector Maigret finds out the truth because he intimately experienced the life of a victim who, in some respects, resembled him. To serve his intellect he uses a medium's empathy. Simenon's great originality is probably the fact that he changed the detective novel into the detectives' novel."
