MAIGRET IN LONDON
How many times did the chief inspector go to England?

 MAIGRET A LONDRA
Quante volte il commissario è andato in Inghilterra ?
MAIGRET A LONDRES

In Maigret's revolver, we see Maigret on Alain Lagrange's trail, which leads him to London. In chapter 6, the narrator points out that there have been "twelve or thirteen years that the chief inspector hadn't set foot in England". The novel being written in 1952, it can be assumed that the plot takes place around the same time. This means that Maigret was in England during WWII, and we can well imagine him refusing to serve the Vichy regime and joining French people in exile...
However, further on in the same chapter, Maigret tells that "it was the first time that he was in England in summertime"; in other words, his stay at that time in the British capital didn’t last long; maybe he would have come only to seek instructions for a Resistance fight?
In chapter 8, Maigret talks about the silver trolley that was to be found in the restaurant "before war", which would mean that he had already been in England in the '30s… Was it at that time that he could attend an investigation in court, as he reminds it in Maigret at the coroner's?
Yet you mustn't forget that Maigret's first investigations were recounted by Simenon in novels and short stories written before WWII, which doesn't simplify things, when you attempt a chronology of the chief inspector's career. In the short story Storm on the Channel, Maigret, who is retired, offers Mme Maigret a trip to England, and he wants to spend a fortnight in London, and "go to shake hands with some colleagues from Scotland Yard with whom [he'd] worked during war". As this short story has been written in 1937-38, Maigret must have been in London during WWI…
And we can add that Maigret must have gone to London at least a second time after the investigation of Maigret's revolver, for, in Maigret and the ghost, it is said that after the investigation of My friend Maigret, he did meet M. Pyke again, twice in London; one could be that of Maigret's revolver, and the second time can only be speculated, since there aren't any allusions to another London trip in the other Presses de la Cité novels… (by Simenon Simenon)

MAIGRET AND THE FIRES IN HIS LIFE…
Let’s talk about three particular fires: those of his pipe, his office heater, and his stove

(by Simenon Simenon)

Delfzijl
