C'est un roman écrit par Simenon en décembre 1940. Il fait partie, avec Les caves du Majestic et La maison du juge, de la trilogie Maigret revient…, publiée en 1942 par Gallimard. Après deux séries de nouvelles, cette trilogie marque le retour en roman du commissaire, et on sent, en particulier dans Cécile est morte, tout le plaisir qu'a le romancier à retrouver son héros et le petit monde dans lequel il évolue.

Commentaire Il est à noter que dans Maigret revient…, Cécile est morte est mis en tête du volume, alors qu'en réalité, sa rédaction suit celle des deux autres romans du recueil. La raison en est peut-être que ce roman nous replonge dans un univers très typique de la saga maigretienne, et que c'est de cette façon que l'éditeur a voulu marquer le retour du commissaire, et son entrée dans la maison Gallimard.
Ce roman est tellement typique que c'est peut-être aussi pour cela qu'il a été choisi comme première adaptation, aussi bien dans la série avec Gino Cervi que dans celle avec Jean Richard. Claude Barma, réalisateur de l'épisode avec Jean Richard, prend le parti de rester très fidèle au roman: "L’adaptation suit exactement le déroulement du roman, et le découpage est pratiquement fait par Simenon lui-même chez qui les chapitres sont autant de courtes séquences; certaines scènes ont pu être transposées sans rien y changer.", affirme-t-il dans une interview. On peut dire que c'est aussi le cas dans la version avec Gino Cervi, et on notera en particulier, dans cette dernière version, l'interprétation truculente du rôle de la concierge par l'actrice Giusi Raspani Dandolo, ainsi que la scène du repas partagé avec Spencer Oats.
Commento Occorre notare che in Maigret revient…, Cécile est morte è messa all’inizio del libro, quando in realtà la sua scrittura é successiva a quella degli altri due romanzi della raccolta. Il motivo può forse essere che questo romanzo ci immerge di nuovo in un universo molto tipico della serie maigrettiana, ed è in questo modo che l’editore ha voluto marcare il ritorno del commissario e il suo ingresso nella casa editrice Gallimard.
Questo romanzo è così emblematico che è per questo che é stato scelto come primo adattamento televisivo anche nella serie italiana con Gino Cervi come in quella di Jean Richard. Claude Barma, regista dell’episodio interpretato da Jean Richard, fa la scelta di rimanere molto fedele al romanzo: «L’adattamento segue fedelmente lo svolgersi del romanzo e il montaggio è praticamente stato fatto dallo stesso Simenon, anche se dei capitoli sono diventate delle brevi sequenze, per altre scene si è potuto trasporle senza cambiare nulla», afferma in un’intervista.
Si può dire che é anche il caso nella versione con Gino Cervi, dove si noterà in quest’ultima versione, la sanguigna interpretazione della portiera dell’attrice Giusy Rasani Dandolo, come la scena del pranzo condiviso con Spencer Oats.
Comment We can note that in Maigret revient...Cécile est morte is put at the top of the volume, whereas in reality, its writing followed those of the other two novels in the collection. Maybe the reason is that this novel immerses again in a very typical universe of the Maigret saga, and thus the publisher wanted to mark the Chief Inspector's coming back, and his entering Gallimard publishing house.
This novel is so typical that maybe it's also the reason why it's been chosen as a first adaptation for the series with Gino Cervi as well as in the series with Jean Richard. Claude Barma, who directed the episode with Jean Richard, decided to remain very faithful to the novel: "The adaptation follows exactly the unfolding of the novel, and the cutting is practically made by Simenon himself, because his chapters are like short sequences; some scenes could be transposed without changing anything", he asserted in an interview.
We can say that it is also the case in the version with Gino Cervi, and we can further note, in this latest version, the colourful interpretation of the role of the concierge by the actress Giusi Raspani Dandolo, as well as the scene of the lunch shared with Spencer Oats.
