Dans son livre de souvenirs, Ma vie sans filet, Jean Richard évoque longuement le commissaire qu'il a incarné pendant plus de vingt ans. Voici ce qu'il disait des débuts de la série: "Maigret, nouveau policier du petit écran, déroutait. Que venait faire ce bonhomme bourru, placide, ne s'exprimant que par des petites phrases laconiques ? Où étaient l'action, les poursuites, les bagarres et les coups de feu ? Cet anti-héros fumait tranquillement la pipe, savourait son calva et réfléchissait. [...] Ce Maigret ne se contentait pas de trouver l'assassin. Il lui fallait aussi découvrir l'homme qu'il était intérieurement ! Ce qui l'intéressait c'était de mettre à nu les comportements."

Nel suo libro di memorie, Ma vie sans filet, Jean Richard evoca a lungo il commissario che ha incarnato per più di vent’anni. Ecco quello che diceva in merito al debutto della serie: «Maigret, nuovo poliziotto del piccolo schermo spiazzava. Cosa veniva a fare questo uomo pacioso, placido che si esprimeva soltanto con delle brevi frasi laconiche? Dov’erano l’azione, gli inseguimenti, gli scontri, le sparatorie? Questo anti-eroe fumava tranquillamente la pipa, assoporava il suo calvados e rifletteva […] Questo Maigret non si accontentava di acciuffare l’assassino. Doveva scoprire l’uomo che c’era dentro! Quello che lo interessava era mettere a nudo i comportamenti».

In his memory book, Ma vie sans filet, Jean Richard talked at length about the Chief Inspector he had played for more than twenty years. Here's what he told about the beginnings of the series: 

"Maigret, as a new policeman on the small screen, was disconcerting. What was he doing, this gruff, placid guy, who was speaking out only with little laconic sentences? Where were action, chasings, fighting and shooting? 

This antihero was quietly smoking his pipe, savouring his calvados and pondering. […] This Maigret did not settle for finding the murderer. He also needed to discover the man he was inside! What interested him was to reveal behaviours." . "
